I found a great app for iOS: PiPifier. It is a Safari extension that lets you use every HTML5 video in Picture in Picture mode — even Youtube’s which normally doesn’t allow that. PiP means that you can listen to/watching Youtube music in the background. It will continue playing if you leave Safari or Youtube App. Normally background playing is a paid feature (part of Youtube Music). I listen to youtube while driving, so background playing helps a lot.

The Folly of Understanding: When AI Outsmarts Us | 05 мая 2022 года, 00:59
I always thought I can explain how anything in the world is built, at least to some extent. I always thought that I knew how machine learning works. I was even creating a chess recognition app which worked well. But the latest news from that area are really shocking. I can’t explain how the trained models can produce such wonderful results.
Look, this model explains the jokes and untwines the stories. I feel like I am being fooled. It’s too good to be true.

P.s. DALL-E 2 is already great https://openai.com/dall-e-2/ it creates realistic images and art from a description in natural language.

Surprising Facts from the World of Language and Literature | 04 мая 2022 года, 20:29
Today I learned that there is Cebuano Wikipedia which has over 6 million articles, making Cebuano the foreign language after English with the most content on the wiki. Most of the articles were created by the bot called Ljsbot. Most of these are machine-translated articles with little to no quality control but still 🙂 6.5M articles – just a bit fewer articles than English. Sverker Johansson has got a great achievement point in his CV.
Also I found that there is a most published author named Philip Parker. He has published over 85,000 books, each of which is completed in less than an hour using algorithms. Parker published the automated books through Icon Group International, using several Icon group subheading. Most of Parker’s automatically generated books target niche markets such as medicine. Example — the books can be bought on Amazon 😉 https://www.amazon.com/Juvenile-Diabetes-Dictionary-Bibliography-References/dp/0597839484

Rain Reveals the Hidden Beauty of Cedar-Apple Rust Fungus | 04 мая 2022 года, 09:01
This is a cedar-apple rust fungus (кедрово-яблочный гниющий гриб). Just photographed it after rain pouring down all the night. After rain, the fungus turns orange and shows its swollen spore-bearing horns. Before rain, while it grows, it looks like a coronavirus, a ball reddish-brown cones with spikes (see the photograph in comments). The botanic name is Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae

The Uncharted Territory of Dog Ownership | 04 мая 2022 года, 08:42
A pair of things have gotten me thinking
– apple watch strongly suggests that walking a dog is a workout for me
– I don’t let my dog go out to our backyard after dark. Because it is too late

The Canine Couch Conundrum | 29 апреля 2022 года, 18:59
Seems to me like my dog really believes that this loveseat couch was bought only for him to replace his small fluffy cuddler bed. And there’s me thinking about why he gave me those weird looks when I was sitting down on the couch next to him. Like, come on daddy go and eat my bowl food then if it comes down to it

Musical Harmonies Across Languages: A Tale of Confusion and Mirroring | 27 апреля 2022 года, 19:04
TIL that in Hebrew and Arab music accidentals may have a weird look. Eb, F#, Bb! Also TIL that musical notation written from left to right (as usual) may co-exist with Hebrew or Arabic written from right to left. Hebrew words are broken up into syllables (which read from-right-to-the-left) which are then arranged from left to right. Quite confusing. Also, there is mirrored music notation as well. Swarming the Skies: The Future of Autonomous Drones on Urban Roofs | 26 апреля 2022 года, 07:46
I believe that in about five years we will see the first examples of compact drones “living” autonomously on roofs in big cities, in places of comparative safety, occasionally going down to perform some missions. I don’t know, surveillance or graffiti missions. They will be solar-powered, and programmed to autonomously find a safe nest on roofs for recharging (solar panels). Recharging may take considerable time but who cares about a single drone if there is a swarm acting together. From time to time they will be able to get connected to the Internet to upload the collected information to the secure cloud with their owners and to receive important updates on their mission from the cloud. They will be able to continuously communicate with the nearby drones to act in coordination. From the technical standpoint, all underlying technologies are ready even today. It’s now up to first working prototypes.
