Unraveling the Mystery of Niagaras Waterfall: A Story of Static Electricity and Anions | 15 августа 2018 года, 20:29

Recently I interested why Niagara waterfall broke my photo in iPhone and what was the reason of the strong noise in the video. I had two guesses: the trivial one (sunlight and reflections) and static electricity from the falling/flying droplets.

The first guess is trivial and not very interesting. As for the static electricity… I’ve found something relevant that made me closer to truth 🙂

“The fact that exceptionally large amount of anions (negative ions) are found under waterfalls and in the seaside are contributed by the German physicist Philipp Eduard Anton von Lenard (Lénárd Fülöp in Hungarian, June 7, 1862 – May 20, 1947) who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1905 for his research on cathode rays and the discovery of many of their properties.

Lenard Effect: The separation of electric charges accompanying the aerodynamic breakup of water drops, first studied systematically by the German physicist P. Lenard. Experiments have shown that the degree of charge separation in spray processes depends upon the drop temperature, presence of dissolved impurities, speed of the impinging air blast, and contact with foreign surfaces. The largest fragments of the broken drops are observed to carry positive charges (or cations) and the fine spray of drops carried off in the impinging air current carries net negative charges (anions).”

The signs I met on my way to Niagara. Americans love signs of all sort, over and over. Standard road signs are supplemented by hundreds of local ones. It was new to me that roads and road shoulders are open to snowmobiles. Looks like winters are really snowy near Niagara.

The waterfall sign is great too.

As we age, our sense of ‘present’ time begins to feel relatively short in comparison to our lifespan, so a year may feel quicker in old age compared to childhood. This is called “proportional theory”.

Fear has a particularly powerful effect on time, slowing down our internal clock so that the fearful event is perceived as lasting longer. In contrast, fun and happy times seem to be over in the blink of an eye.

Почему на Ниагаре столько индусов?

Когда собираешься на выходные на океан, а вдруг неожиданно все меняешь и едешь на Ниагарский водопад — это незабываемо! Мощь, энергия, заряд позитива. И всего-то 7,5 часов на машине.

Не зря индусы внесли Ниагару в check-list мест, в которых должен побывать каждый индус. Когда мы приехали на американскую сторону Ниагары, у меня было ощущение, что я попала в Индию: огромное количество индийских ресторанов, женщины в нарядных сари, многочисленные индийские семьи. А я ведь в детстве жила в Индии два года с родителями. Решила поговорить об этом с одним индусом, который следом стоял в очереди в к подножью водопада — Cave of the Winds. А стояли мы час. Так вот он объяснил, что для индусов это фантастическое, святое место из фильмов. И каждый индус, приезжающий в Америку, мечтает здесь побывать. Особенно, если дети живут в Штатах, а родители приезжают к ним в гости, то это первое место для путешествий. А так как индийские родители признают только свою кухню, то проще было застроить всю американскую сторону индийскими ресторанами:) Как-то так:))
А вообще здорово! Это просто маленькое наблюдение:)
